Türkiye in Global Transformations

Türkiye in Global Transformations

Following the editorial work carried out on the refereed articles presented at the conference organized by the International Relations Working Group in Istanbul and attended by more than 60 scientists from 20 countries, TÜBA published “Global Transformations and Türkiye”, which bears the same name as the conference.

The work edited by Prof. Ahmet Nuri Yurdusev, a TÜBA Full Member and the Coordinator of the TÜBA International Relations Working Group, along with Asst. Prof. Mürsel Doğrul, a faculty member at the National Defense University, includes contributions from academics and experts from America, Asia, Europe, and Africa on various global challenges such as international relations, economic transformations, migration, and technological advancements. This study, divided into thematic sections addressing significant global issues such as the international order, the importance of middle powers, and Türkiye’s strategic responses to these global changes, consists of six main sections and 36 subsections: “World Dis/orders in the Age of Global Transformations”, “Great Powers and Middle Powers in a Changing World”, “Türkiye on the Cusp of Persistent Challenges and Global Transformations”, “Challenges of Migration and New Channels of Diplomacy”,  “New Media, the Challenge of AI/Cyberspace and Non-state Actors”,  and “Challenges in Economy, Business, and Finance.”

The role of Türkiye in the global world is highlighted
TÜBA President Prof. Muzaffer Şeker reminded that the title of Global Transformations was determined as a thematic topic for the science academies of G20 countries in 2024, and emphasized that TÜBA International Relations Working Group decided to bring the studies and research on Global Transformations in Türkiye to the scientific literature with an international publication in 2023, long before this decision. Accordingly, he stated that the book deals with global transformations with a focus on Türkiye. President Şeker said that in the book, the topics, problems and crises created by the new and developing technology trends of the international relations agenda point to a reform in the international system and a functional international system.

President Şeker said; “The book was prepared with a comprehensive approach that examines Türkiye's unique geopolitical and economic experiences in the context of global changes. It offers new perspectives on Türkiye's changing role in new security paradigms such as international peacekeeping, energy security and hybrid warfare. The inclusion of unique analyses, such as mapping semiconductor research trends and Türkiye's diplomacy initiatives, highlights Türkiye's importance as a key player in global political and economic reforms and makes it an important resource for understanding its strategic vision in the modern world. The book also covers cutting-edge technology topics such as artificial intelligence and the impact of digital diplomacy, as well as Türkiye's corporate digital responsibility and the political economy of Islamic finance. This makes the book not only an editorial academic resource, but also an essential reference for policymakers, diplomats and academics seeking to understand how Türkiye is navigating the rapidly transforming global landscape.”

Analyzing Türkiye's response to regional and global crises
Noting that the book is a comprehensive academic work that examines the complex dynamics of globalization and Türkiye's changing role on the world stage, Prof. Yurdusev said that the book focuses particularly on Türkiye's role in these transformations and offers a comprehensive analysis of important global changes. “The book examines the evolving relationship between the East-West and the Global South, focusing on critical issues such as sustainability, economic development, migration and security challenges. Focusing on Türkiye's strategic position and historical ties, it explains its responses to regional and global crises such as the Syrian Civil War, the Gulf War, the Russian-Ukrainian War and the Palestinian-Israeli War. Furthermore, it highlights emerging trends such as the race for supremacy in artificial intelligence and semiconductors, and energy transitions by global and regional actors, especially Türkiye.”
