TÜBA Member Prof. Sachs Receives Honorary Doctorate from Boğaziçi University

Prof. Dr. Jeffrey David Sachs, an Honorary Member of TÜBA, recipient of the 2021 TÜBA International Academy Award, and Professor at Columbia University, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Boğaziçi University. Prof. Dr. Sachs was presented with his honorary doctorate diploma by Rector Prof. Dr. Naci İnci during a ceremony held at Albert Long Hall on Boğaziçi University’s South Campus.

In the Boğaziçi University Senate’s reasoned decision regarding Prof. Dr. Sachs’s eligibility for the honorary doctorate, the following statement was made: “Due to his pioneering work at the global level on the relationships between sustainable development, the climate crisis, the eradication of poverty, peace, and multilateralism, and his unique contributions to humanity’s shared future, Prof. Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs has been deemed worthy of an honorary doctorate by the Boğaziçi University Senate, with all the associated rights and responsibilities.”

In his remarks at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Sachs addressed current global developments. He emphasized the need to strengthen international dialogue, peace, and multilateral cooperation, noting that Türkiye occupies an important position due to its diplomatic capacity at both the regional and global levels. Drawing attention to the need to take immediate action to combat the climate crisis and emphasizing the importance of accelerating the transition to a green economy, Sachs expressed his belief that Türkiye can play a leading role in this transformation through international climate initiatives and sustainable development policies.

Who is Prof. Dr. Jeffrey David Sachs?
He was born in 1954. He received his master’s degree in 1978 and his Ph.D. in 1980 from the Department of Economics at Harvard University. Prof. Dr. Sachs has held various leadership positions within international sustainable development organizations and has served as a visiting scholar and researcher at universities and research institutions in many countries. He has also served as a consultant for internationally active programs in the field of economic development. Additionally, he has conducted significant research on sustainable growth and development, as well as in the context of ethical economics.

In 2021, he received the TÜBA Academy Prize in the Social Sciences and Humanities. In 2022, he was elected an Honorary Member of TÜBA. Currently serving as a faculty member at Columbia University in New York, Prof. Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs continues his work as Director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
