TÜBA Member Prof. Kavzoğlu Elected as a Senior Member of IEEE

TÜBA Full Member Prof. Taşkın Kavzoğlu was elected as a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) from Türkiye, which is the highest level of IEEE in the field of Geospatial Engineering.

Prof. Kavzoğlu, a faculty member at Gebze Technical University (GTU), became the first scientist to be elected as a Senior Member for his unique and meaningful contributions to his field with the election made after the referee reports on him and the evaluation of his academic studies in the relevant bodies of IEEE. Kavzoğlu also continues to work in the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) sub-working group.

Who is Prof. Taşkın Kavzoğlu?
He graduated as the top student from the Geomatics Engineering program at Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) and completed his master’s degree at the University of Nottingham with honors. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the Best PhD Thesis of the Year by the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society in the UK. In addition to his international journal articles, conference papers, and project awards, the student theses he supervised have also received national and international recognition. Since its announcement, he has been the only Geomatics Engineer to be included in Stanford University’s “World’s Most Influential Scientists List” in both the career-long and annual performance categories.

He was the editor of the book titled “Forest Fires: Causes, Effects, Monitoring, Precautionary Measures, and Rehabilitation Activities”, published by TÜBA in 2021. In addition to his academic work, he has served as the head of department, dean, and vice-rector at Gebze Technical University (GTU). He has taken active roles in various ministry and municipal projects, and most recently, he actively participated in the Risk Shield Model Project conducted in the earthquake-affected region under the auspices of the Presidency.

Prof. Kavzoğlu, the first and only Geomatics Engineer member of TÜBA, conducts research in the fields of Earth observation, remote sensing of natural resources, deep learning, machine learning, data mining, climate change, object-based image analysis, and disaster monitoring and risk assessment. He serves as an external advisor for graduate theses at universities in Türkiye and Malaysia. He is a member of the editorial boards of many national and international journals. He founded and currently directs the Advanced Remote Sensing Technology Laboratory (ARTLAB), which conducts research using remote sensing technologies to study the effects of climate change on residential areas, forests, seas, and agricultural lands. He has published articles on earthquakes, forest fires, and the mucilage events in the Sea of Marmara.
