Workshop on the Current Situation and Future of Water Resources in the Framework of Climate Change prepared by TÜBA Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Change Working Group (ÇBİD) was held at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center.
More than 500 participants attended the workshop
Participating in the workshop as a speaker, General Director of State Hydraulic Works Prof. Dr. Lütfi Akca talked about “Climate Change, Turkey's Underground and Surface Water Resources”. In the workshop; "Climate Change, Climate Change and Hydrometeorological Disasters, Climate Change, Underground and Surface Waters, Climate Change, Water Resources and Local Governments, Climate Change, Energy and Water Policies, Climate Change and Wetlands-Vulnerable Ecosystems", as total of six sessions were held. In the two-day program, a total of 19 presentations were made by scientists, experts and public administrators from ministries to universities, related institutes and non-governmental organizations, ranging from Climate Change, Projections of the World and Turkey to Water Planning of Local Governments in the Process of Climate Change.
The opening of the program was made by TÜBA Principal Member and CBID Working Group Coordinator Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Aydın, Rector of ITU Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu, TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker and Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya. Speaking at the program with more than 500 participants, President Şeker said, “TÜBA fulfills its duties with the responsibility of being the national science academy of our country. In this sense, our scientific activities continue on strategic issues related to the future of our country and the world.”
The results of the research show that we do not have time anymore.
Prof. Şeker said that Science 20, which also includes TÜBA, has examined the declarations they have presented to the leaders of the G20 countries so far. At the same time, He emphasized that he redefines the solutions to multidimensional problems and the topics that policy makers should pay attention to every year. Prof. Şeker continued as follows: “It seems that if we had been more attentive and careful in the past, we would have been talking about these topics in a very different way now. Mankind is betraying the world, nature and generation. In the use of natural resources and nature, even if we only respect the space we need individually, it may be enough, but our ambition and desire make the world more unlivable, we both pollute and consume. Water is a vital value. Where there is no water, agriculture and animal husbandry, health, energy, in short, life does not exist. Our awareness of this issue is more valuable than many things we spend time in our daily lives. Scientists are partially doing their part. The results obtained in the research show that we do not have time to forward them to the necessary authorities.”
