TÜBA Council's Public Statement on the Attempted Coup D’état
A coup d’état attempt on 15 July 2016 by some factions within the military forces in Turkey failed as a result of the resistance by Turkish people together with the government and security forces loyal to democracy and civilian government.
Over 200 people, whose overwhelming majority were civilians, have been murdered during the direct attacks upon the civilians, Parliament and governmental facilities by coup plotters with heavy armoury and air bombardment. Some scientists too lost their lives as a result of those attacks.
The Academy Council of the Turkish Academy of Sciences strongly condemns this coup attempt and sincerely shares the sorrows of the families of the deceased and indeed that of the whole Turkish people. We firmly confirm that there can be no excuse and no justification whatsoever for a coup attempted to overthrow a democratically elected government.
The Academy Council calls upon the government that the perpetrators of this heinous crime must be found and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
