Through cooperation between TÜBA and the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) and the contributions of the Global Network of Science Academies – IAP, the “AASSA-TÜBA Sustainability for Food Safety Management Regional Workshop” is being organized to take place in Istanbul at the Legacy Ottoman Hotel on April 9-10, 2015.

The objective of the workshop organized by the TÜBA Food and Nutrition Study Group, which will be attended by scientists from many different countries, is to hold discussions on the behavioral, biophysical, economic, institutional, political, social and technological factors of global food security now and in the future. Food production from agriculture and livestock and other sources; the existence of food security, access, use and dimensions of consistency as well as the interaction and balance between economic, environmental, health and social goals and results; processing, distribution and consumption of food, the related food management activities and the strong climate change impact that is awaited are among the subjects that will be discussed.

TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar: “Food Security and management is a global concern”

TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar said the following on the subject: “The fact that there are serious problems concerning production and distribution in the world, that many people are suffering from famine and a great rise in population is expected to occur in the next twenty years and the food management system needs to be reassessed in connection with this are issues/concerns that have emerged in our day at the level of food security and management. An important task of science academies is to produce solutions based on science for national and global issues. We hope that the “AASSA-TÜBA Sustainability for Food Safety Management Regional Workshop” we have organized through cooperation between TÜBA and AASSA in Istanbul, in which scientists from many different countries will be participating, provides significant contributions in the field of food security and management. The opinions and suggestions that are presented in the workshop will be compiled in a report and made available to the public.”

TÜBA Food and Nutrition Study Group Coordinator Prof. Dr. Kazım Şahin said “In the workshop with scientists participating from many different countries, subjects like the local and global analyses of food safety, implementing policies for local and global food security, the sustainable reinforcement of food production systems, urbanization, food value chains, and food security, technological innovations to help feed 9 billion people, the effects of climate change and possible strategies to handle this, competition in demands and trading of land and water sources, agriculture-nutrition-health connection, reduction of losses and waste and business-science cooperation to increase food security will be discussed”.
