TÜBA Chairman Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar: "The Young Academy is Really Taking Shape with GEBİP"

TÜBA Chairman Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar started his speech by extending his wishes for a successful 46th General Assembly for the Academy and continued “After we present TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Doğan with his certificate of membership, our valued teacher and our source of pride TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Gazi Yaşargil, who is among us here today, will share his infinite wisdom on a worldwide scale with us. I would like to thank our teacher and his wife for their attendance today. I would also like to congratulate all of our members who made successful achievements this year at the 46th General Assembly and express my condolences for TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Burhan Say, who passed away this year”.

Prof. Dr. Acar, who also spoke about the achievements of TÜBA members within the past year, added “The number of reward recipients went up to 161 for TEÇEP and 335 for GEBİP this year and judging by the applicants for the next term we think these figures will get even higher. I would like to point out here that the content achieved by the Young Academy with GEBİP and the structuring work continues. I think that GEBİP, which is accepted as the first example of a Young Academy, is shaping up quickly.

Our efforts to be a more encompassing and more institutional science academy with the responsibility of being a science academy will continue with your contributions, thank you all”.

TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Doğan was presented with a Certificate of Membership
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Doğan, who was elected to become a TÜBA Honorary Member at the 45th General Assembly held on June 23, 2014, was presented with a certificate of membership by TÜBA Chairman Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar.
TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Doğan, who took the stand and expressed his gratitude, said “Every Turk who is involved in science wishes to become part of such a society. When I presented my first international paper in 1969, I was a doctorate student in Germany and select scientists were introduced as members of the academies they belonged to. At that time I had imagined becoming a member of an academy in my own country. When I was in Germany people would ask me “Do Turks even produce science? – that made me sad… But the huge distance we have covered since 1969 to the present makes me very happy”.

TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Emin Kansu: “Prof. Dr. Burhan Say was an outstanding academician and scientist”
TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Emin Kansu, who started his speech by providing information about the education of TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Burhan Say, said “In his time he knew very well the importance of reliable chromosome analyses and cytogenetic analyses, what they meant and how to interpret them. He also had some serious interest in setting up laboratories. He made important contributions to the correct diagnosis of congenital anomalies in children and the identification of chromosome anomalies. He was very interested in congenital nerve disorders in children.”

“Prof. Dr. Say liked students and assistants and would actively share all he knew. He loved to have science discussions with his students. He was an outstanding academician and scientist. He had a great impact on us as a mentor. We remember him with love and respect and miss him dearly.”

TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil “I was introduced to science when I was 10 and still cannot part from it”
