All Subfields of Engineering Come Together in One Dictionary

TÜBA has published the expanded and updated 2nd edition of Engineering Sciences as a result of its efforts to ensure consistency in Turkish terminology in engineering disciplines and enrich the language of science. Comprising a total of four volumes, the work covers modern engineering concepts within the scope of TÜBA's long-standing “Turkish Scientific Terminology Dictionary” project and provides English equivalents for the terms, creating a resource that meets international standards.

The most comprehensive reference source in its field
Prepared under the leadership of TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, edited by Prof. Dr. İzzet Öztürk and his assistant Senior Engineer Aslı Özabalı Sabuncugil, the work was designed to prevent the confusion of terms arising from the influence of foreign languages in engineering sciences and to strengthen Turkish as a language of science. First published in 2020, the work was updated in 2025, taking into account developing technology and changing engineering needs.  During the preparation process, experts, academics, and engineers from a wide range of disciplines, from information technology to construction, food engineering to aviation, contributed to the work. Unlike the first edition, all English equivalents were reviewed and revised. To prevent confusion, the different meanings of a term in various engineering fields, such as chemistry, agriculture, and construction, were defined separately. Covering a wide range of topics from software architecture to materials science, the work includes current technological concepts as well as Turkish equivalents of traditional engineering terms and their historical usage.

Stating that the work continues to be the most comprehensive reference source in its field in terms of bringing together all sub-branches of engineering in Türkiye under a single terminological umbrella, TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker said that dynamic developments in the field of engineering and the intense interest shown in the first edition made it necessary to update the work. President Şeker said: “In the second edition, the list of terms has been revised, non-technical words have been removed, existing definitions have been refined, and foreign language equivalents consistent with international literature have been systematically added. Volume 4, covering the letters R-Z, consists of 648 pages and contains thousands of technical terms with detailed explanations.”
