TÜBA-AR is now listed in Scopus, the International Citation Index

The Journal of Archaeology (TÜBA-AR), published by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) since 1998, has been accepted into Scopus, one of the world’s largest abstract and citation databases.

The application submitted by TÜBA-AR—founded by Türkiye's leading archaeologists—to be included in the Scopus index, which comprises peer-reviewed publications of international standing, has been accepted. In this context, this development is considered a significant step toward enabling TÜBA-AR to reach a broad and international research community, laying the groundwork for international projects and academic collaborations to strengthen partnerships, enhancing the visibility of the national academy through publication incentives, and providing opportunities for scientific citations.

In a statement from TÜBA, it was noted that the journal, prepared by competent scientists with a strong international editorial board, consists of fifteen editors (three of whom are foreign) selected with consideration for regional distribution, field of expertise, and gender equality. It was noted that the process continues with expert editors who are well-versed in terrestrial and underwater archaeology, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean archaeology, and studies of various periods, and who have led significant archaeological excavations.

To enhance the journal’s academic and technical quality, promote it, increase its prestige both in Türkiye and within the international archaeological community, and align with current journal trends in terms of format, content, and publication standards, adjustments were made by the TÜBA and TÜBA-AR Journal Editorial Board. The TÜBA-AR Editorial Board stated, “We are pleased with the positive outcome of this process, which has progressed through collaboration, academic and technical contributions, and the exchange of ideas in the journal’s operations. We look forward to receiving studies from both domestic and international sources, hoping to represent our country—the heart of history and civilization—at the highest possible level within the international academic community.”

Over its 28-year history of periodic publication, TÜBA-AR has amassed an archive of 37 issues as of April 2026. Since its inception, the journal has featured articles by leading local and international archaeologists and excavation teams, as well as findings related to new archaeological discoveries. The journal’s archive includes articles in German, English, French, and Turkish from archaeologists and excavation teams in 23 countries. As an internationally peer-reviewed and open-access journal, it is published twice a year in June and December. It adheres to a publication policy aimed at documenting cultural heritage on a scientific basis, transmitting society’s collective memory to future generations, and strengthening academic knowledge in this field. The journal contributes to the understanding and transmission of humanity’s shared cultural values through studies in archaeology, cultural heritage, art history, anthropology, and related disciplines. A wide range of content, including material remains, cultural landscapes, oral narratives, traditional knowledge systems, rituals, and beliefs, is included in the scope of evaluation. Inventory studies are encouraged to produce documentation; publications adhering to the principles of scientific validity, proper use of sources, and transparency are supported. The journal’s archive is accessible both in print and digitally.

Scopus is the most widely used, comprehensive abstract and citation database in the academic world. It aims to make the scientific output of researchers, institutions, and publications visible and analyzable. Scopus offers a vast collection of content, including millions of publications such as scientific journals, books, conference proceedings, and preprints. This enables researchers to easily access published works on specific topics, track developments in their fields, and discover new research trends. Through advanced search and analysis tools, Scopus provides rapid access to relevant academic resources, helps identify emerging research topics and trends, and makes researchers and institutions visible for potential collaborations. Additionally, through its analytical and metric tools (such as indicators measuring the impact of journals, authors, and articles), it enables the evaluation of research performance. Researchers’ work, citations, and academic impact can be tracked through author profiles. It is a robust research infrastructure that facilitates the discovery, evaluation, and global sharing of scientific knowledge.
