Social Sciences in Türkiye: Research Ecosystem, Trends, and Policy Recommendations

Conclusion and Recommendations

This chapter brings together the findings and assessments presented throughout the volume and offers an overall synthesis of the current state of the social sciences research ecosystem in Turkey, along with policy recommendations derived from this synthesis. By integrating the structural analyses, bibliometric and thematic investigations, and stakeholder perspectives discussed in the preceding chapters, it identifies the main strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and risks of the social sciences in terms of institutional capacity, research quality, thematic orientations, alignment with national priorities and global competitiveness. The chapter organises recommendations for improving the research ecosystem under several headings, including science policy and governance, funding and incentive mechanisms, research infrastructure and data ecosystems, human resources and early-career researchers, interdisciplinarity and internationalisation, and the interaction between universities, public institutions and society. It concludes by outlining a roadmap that distinguishes between short-, medium- and long-term action areas, clarifies the roles of key stakeholders and emphasises the need for robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks. In doing so, the chapter not only assesses the current position of the social sciences in Turkey, but also discusses the institutional and intellectual transformation pathways necessary for their future development.
