Aristotle’s Poetics, although some of its sections have survived only in fragmentary form, is the first work in the history of philosophy to explore art. Having influenced countless thinkers over the centuries and shaped the philosophy of art, Poetics is regarded as the seminal work in the history of aesthetics. The ‘Poetics’ written by the three great Islamic philosophers ( Fârâbî, İbn Sînâ and İbn Rüşd) were composed with reference to Aristotle’s Poetics; they stand before us as the most important texts that demonstrate how this foundational work was understood in the Islamic world and that shaped Islamic thought on art and aesthetics. The general consensus regarding the difficulties and risks of translating source texts certainly applies to the Poetics as well.
